Dubrovnik, known as the Pearl of the Adriatic, is one of Croatia's most popular tourist destinations. This museum town is one of the most beautiful in the world, with its pink-tiled houses, palaces, ramparts and Slavic culture. In recent years, specialized tours have been organized here to discover the major filming locations of the Game of Thrones series for fans of the series. Further afield, the Mojet National Park offers an opportunity to appreciate the lakes and rocky mountains close to Montenegro. Nearby Korcula is a particularly well-preserved old town. Occupied by various civilizations over the centuries, the village boasts architecture that combines Slavic and Mediterranean cultures.
Split is one of Croatia's other major tourist attractions. It boasts a unique city center set in the remains of Diocletian's palace. Don't miss the cathedral and its campanile, or the Peristyle, the city's nerve center. Off the coast, the island of Hvar is surely one of the most beautiful Croatian islands. Here, you can admire typical villages set amid lavender and pine fields, surrounded by coves and pleasant beaches. Less well known are the villages of Trogir, Sibenik and Zadar, with their interesting religious heritage. Zagreb may not have the charm of Dubrovnik or Split, but it is not lacking in interest. The Austro-Hungarian-built city boasts a blend of neoclassical and Art Nouveau architecture, with narrow cobbled streets. Not far away, the town of Opatija features the same recent style. Ravinj, the jewel of the Istria region, allows you to admire a Euphrasian basilica before visiting the various hilltop villages that surround this part of Croatia.
Due to its geographical location, Croatia is crossed by a wide range of climates, which vary according to the region you're visiting. Inland, you'll enjoy a continental climate with hard, snowy winters and hot, stormy summers. By contrast, the coastal climate is Mediterranean, with mild winters and hot, dry summers. At this time of year, the average sea temperature is 26°C. The Hora wind from the northwest and the Jugo wind from the south, however, modulate these conditions. The off-seasons are the most pleasant times to discover Croatia, particularly between May and September, despite the strong influence of tourists between July and August.
